Oswald "Ozzie" the Lucky Rabbit
There are two sides to every lucky coin, and the same is true of our (un)lucky rabbit. At times, Oswald can be a perfectly friendly, decent guy. He's loyal to those he thinks deserve it, and enjoys some good, clean fun. Adventurous, easily love-struck, and always eager, he's no Mickey Mouse, but he's far from despicable.
On the other hand, Oswald falls into the depths of his own bitterness easily, and when he does, he can be a nasty guy. Ge gets sarcastic, angry, and highly suspicious of others. Envy is a key emotion with Oswald, as is a feeling of being unloved that he deals with by lashing out.
Oswald the Lucky Rabbit as we know him today, more or less, was born September 5th, 1927, with the premiere of the successful "Trolley Troubles" short film. Roughtly twenty-five shorts followed, and Oswald was considered an overall success, even making it onto candy bars and stencil set. But it was short-lived. Less than a year had gone by before Oswald was taken from Walt in a bit of trickery that ultimately ended in Walt having a choice: Receive only a small cut of the money made from Oswald's future fame, or give up the rights to the character all together. Walt chose to lose rights to Oswald... And by late 1928, Mickey Mouse had been born.
Oswald grew incredibly jealous of Mickey, who he saw as stealing his fame. He was so focused on the Mouse that he didn't spend much time thinking about the choice of the man who made him.
AU-ish History
The rights to Oswald the Lucky Rabbit went back to Disney in early February of 2006. The Toon, who had been living a hermit's life in the outskirts of Toon Town, returned to one of the Disney sectors of town, which was by then known as Mouseton. He was unsure of what to expect, but was greeted by an enthusiastic Mickey Mouse. Before he could decide if he wanted to forgive the Toon who his creator so readily replaced him with, Oswald was whisked away on a tour through many worlds to meet each and every character that had come to be during his absence. Oswald was overwhelmed, and didn't retain much of the information that was being forced on him - Except... He did notice that not only did everyone seem to love Mickey, but Mickey seemed to return this love. He seemed to be a swell guy. Upon returning to Mouseton, Mickey sheepishly offered an apology to Oswald for all he'd been through. Oswald somewhat reluctantly accepted, finally letting go of his grudge.
Through the rest of the month, Oswald - nicknamed "Ozzie" by many of the Disney characters - put a lot of thought into what had happened, and came to the upsetting conclusion that Walt had never seen him as a son the way Oswald had seen him as a father. Especially damaging was learning Walt's alleged words to those who ended up with ownership over Oswald: "Here, you can have the little bastard! He’s all yours.". Ozzie began to withdraw again, upset by this development, and began to spend a lot of his time in the outskirts of Toon Town once again. One day, in March, he happened across Julius the cat, Walt's true first steady Toon. Julius had gone slightly mad over the years. He was never able to separate his acting work from reality, even with things like the actress portraying Alice changing and his own name being changed in certain shorts, and so when it all fell apart and Alice seemingly disappeared, the Toon's world came crashing down on him. He had to face the truth about the little girl he so dearly loved, and it messed with his mind a bit. The two became friends when Ozzie explained that he knew what it was like to be forgotten, and Ozzie returned to the outskirts of Toon Town to keep an eye on the less stable Toon.
Currently, Ozzie lives in a house barely within Toon Town boundaries, along with Julius. He's shunned contact with Mickey, once again jealous - this time not of the fame, but of Walt's love. He knows vaguely that a video game has recently come out staring him, but hasn't bothered to look into the details.
Oswald the Lucky Rabbit belongs to Disney. I claim no ownership to the character, and no connection to the company that owns him.
I make no profit from this journal. It is for entertainment purposes only. I did not make this journal to criticize Walt Disney, nor do I believe he made the wrong choice in giving away Oswald or creating Mickey, etc.; all such views are simply "in-character" statements.
